Jen Bonnett Teaches Us to Pitch

The week o' Startup Pirates gets closer and closer - and as we get closer, the more mentors, judges, and workshop hosts we have clambering aboard our sea-soaked deck!  We now have Jen Bonnet of the ATDC and Startup Chicks with us to host the workshop on pitching!

Jen leads the ATDC’s educational programs and statewide outreach to entrepreneurs. She is a technology entrepreneur with 20 years of experience in information technology/software development, specializing in Web and mobile. She is also the Chief Chick and Founder of StartupChicks, a community for like-minded female entrepreneurs to connect, talk, and learn from each other.

Welcome Jen Bonnett aboard!

Our First Judge Is Here: Karyn Lu!

For the end of the week, when the final pitch day is upon us, we're wrangling up the most weather-worn pirates to lay down the final judgement, give critical feedback, and determine our winners - that's right, we have our first Judge with us: Karyn Lu of Turner!

Karyn is Director of Product Strategy & Partnerships at HLN, a network currently reinventing itself as the first TV home for the social media generation. Previously, Karyn was the lead futurist / trendspotter at Turner Broadcasting, and a UX designer at CNN.com, where she co-founded CNN iReport.

Karyn is passionate about the Atlanta community and serves in an advisory capacity to organizations including WABE 90.1 FM (Atlanta’s NPR station) and BurnAway. She is part of the LEAD Atlanta Class of 2014. Karyn is a frequent public speaker and has been featured at TEDxCentennialParkWomen and Creative Mornings Atlanta. She holds a M.S. in Digital Media from Georgia Tech and a B.A. in English Literature from Wellesley College.

Outside of work, Karyn plays violin with Atlanta-based band Oryx & Crake. She lives in Grant Park with her husband Keith, their son Leo & dog Sputnik.

We're mighty excited to have her with us on our Juding Panel!

Craig Johnson Joins the Speaker Deck!

Arr, me hearties!  It's been awhile since we've talked about more guests comin' aboard!  We recently had the fine fortune of having Craig Johnson of Matchstic.com join us as a speaker for program's Friday "Branding and Marketing" workshop!  Tis a fine occasion for us all!

Craig is the President and co-founder of Matchstic. A native Atlantan, Craig graduated from Georgia State University and for his entire career he has worked on the business side of a creative industry, starting with managing rock bands and moving on to become the business arm of Matchstic. His vision for the company was to create a place where smart creatives could thrive and produce work that generates real change for business.

Let's welcome Craig Johnson aboard, and thank him heartily for sharing his branding expertise with us!  Arrr!

Startup Pirates Info Session, Incoming!

Good news to everyone who's curious, or cautiously confused, about Startup Pirates - we're holding an info session on Tuesday July 14th, from 7-9pm!

We want to educate Atlanta about who the Pirates are, how they came about, and why they're now in Georgia.  We think Startup Pirates has a great role to play here, and we'd love to give everyone all the information they want.  It's hosted by our good friends at DeskHub and will have food, drink, a Pirate-y Panel, and Q&A (plus #PIRATESWAG).  So tell your friends and sign up for a ticket (they're free!) - we need to know how many will be in attendance to know hard we'll be partying.

So come drop anchor at DeskHub, drink some grog, eat some hard tack, and learn the grand history of the Pirates!

Free Landlubber Ticket!
